Protect Your Business (1)

Consider the security of a home
based Internet business. An image that jumps into many minds is that of
legions of hackers arrayed in an invisible battle formation ready to
attack your computer. The hacker is a risk to your business however
there are also many other risks to think about.
Assets
Your
business consists of assets. If one or more of these assets is damaged,
lost or destroyed then what are the consequences to your business. Loss
of an asset could range from mildly inconvenient to absolutely
disastrous. What are your assets? Your biggest asset is yourself. Your
data, PC, software, communications equipment, storage media and business
documentation are all assets.
Environment
Let’s
look at the immediate environment where you work. Consider temperature
and humidity. Do your PC and monitor have sufficient air circulation to
keep cool? Papers resting on the PC or monitor will reduce air
circulation. Dust deposits will also hamper circulation. Your
equipment’s effective life will be considerably shortened if operated
without adequate ventilation. Keep your work area tidy and dust free.
Look around. Would you say your work area is suitably protected? Where
do you stand the coffee cup whilst working? What could happen if it were
knocked over? Documents could be damaged or the PC’s base unit filled
with coffee. Liquid and electronics do not mix.
Fire
Fire is a risk. Keep your work area
tidy. Don’t store papers or books on electrical equipment. If you are
a smoker then take care when putting out that cigarette. Keep a
hand-held fire extinguisher in accessible place. Install a smoke
detector in your work area.
